5 STARS
The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves at odds with those who don’t. As the kingdoms of Erilea fracture around her, enemies must become allies if Aelin is to keep those she loves from falling to the dark forces poised to claim her world. With war looming on all horizons, the only chance for salvation lies in a desperate quest that may mark the end of everything Aelin holds dear. Aelin’s journey from assassin to queen has entranced millions across the globe, and this fifth installment will leave fans breathless. Will Aelin succeed in keeping her world from splintering, or will it all come crashing down? WARNING…Some mild spoilers – not too much though. And what an epic of proportions are we facing…such an amazing, heart-breaking cliff-hanger! Is Aelin really going to die? It can’t be. Can’t we have a happy soppy fairy-tale ending for peat sake!?? Another absolute epic description of vast mysterious worlds and creatures. You smell the green pastures. You reek of vile dark blood. Your bones shiver from iron teeth and nails screeching. You dance and become one with the ocean. The saltiness lingers upon your tongue as you set sail with the crew. Your thoughts and words are vulgar matching the drunkards. Love consumes your heart as their touch shatters your body. You watch in awe as the sea monsters lunge out of the water licking the sun with their arrogance. Sarah J Maas really did a superb job on description of scenery. I really don’t have a favorite character as each and every one of Aelin’s cadre snuggled deeply into my heart. Even Manon Blackbeak. What a turn of events indeed. In this installment you really get annoyed with Aelin and her lies. But in the end, you cheer for her not being able to stay mad at her. She absolutely completely crawls under your skin. So much deception and betrayal. It stings all over. Just as you thought things are heading a certain way, some character…good or evil smacks a rock in your face. You can’t keep up. It’s crazy. I loved Lorcan and Elide’s story. Who would’ve thought. But then again, as you squirm within their chemistry, Maeve comes along with her invisible leash and tears everything to bits and pieces. There’s so much I want to swoon over when it comes to Lorcan and Elide…but it will reveal spoilers which...nope, read the book! Aedion and Lysandra, another beautiful description of something brewing which might just evolve into a blossoming flower. Some may find this cliché as every character now suddenly has a love interest. However, I kind of enjoyed learning both their soft sides and obviously their monstrosity sides. No other words to describe it really. Lots and lots of killing. War has indeed peaked and we have to wait and see what happens. Lysandra became a really strong character. She’s taking full control of her shifting capabilities. One of my best scenes happened in Skulls Bay as she morphed into a Sea Dragon. She toyed with the adults and the bull. Eventually after much screaming and loud chanting from my side, Lysandra kicked their fishy butts to the deepest depths of the oceans! An epic scene indeed. It was really difficult to decide which part in the book I enjoyed best, because the whole damn book kept me on edge…literally! The part that really saddened me, as if this series was based upon real events…that’s how deeply it affected me, was when Maeve captured Aelin and let Cairn whip her. The humility and horror. It was Endovier times a thousand all over again. Especially as the Fae warriors and the rest of Aelins’ cadre, some of them, only stood by and watched their queen bleed. Again, Sarah J Maas did not hold back while delivering a superb fantasy series. Detail upon detail. Twists and turns. Pain and heartache endured. Love explored to the ends of the worlds. I’m actually quite speechless. I can’t believe I have to wait until October this year before the next book comes out. Noooo!!
